I use the soft cases or silicone cases to protect my cell phone. It's very useful. They still protect the phone. Hard cases can slightly scratch paint off of the phone, if it has a plastic surface. A silicone cover is better to protective against shock damage, which would be like dropping the phone or it hitting a surface. A hard case would be better against other things, aside from shock damage.
