My favorite folk tale is the story of Xiang Miang, the trickster.
I know one version. It is told by Miss Ruengyot Srisamart, one of my story collecting.
The name of this story is Xiang Miang and Chicken’s stool.
Once there was a little novice living with the old monk at the temple somewhere in the northeastern of Thailand. His name is Xiang Miang. He is very smart. We all knew that he was trickster. As we know that monks and novices aren’t allow eating after 11.00 a.m. but nobody can’t dissuade Xiang Miang.
One day when the old monk has to go outside the temple, he orders Xiang Miang to take care of the building.
‘Don’t let the chicken defecate around the house. When I come back the ground must be clean’ old monk said
On the late afternoon, the old monk comes back to the temple. What he see is everywhere on the ground is full of chicken’s stool. He was so angry.
‘Xiang Miang!!!!’ ‘Why you let the chicken defecates in my house.’ ‘I’m going to punish you.’
‘I’m so sorry master.’ ‘Is it fair if I punish myself by licking all chicken stools out.’ the trickery, Xiang Miang says
‘Good. Do it now’ monk
Xiang Miang licks all the chicken stools out in a few minutes. The old monk was so wondered about it.
‘Is the chicken’s stool taste good? Why you are able to eat them?’ the monk asks
‘It tastes good master’ ‘Try one’ little novice
The old monk eats one and says ‘Ah… It’s so sweet like a sugar cane’
That day pass; finally the old monk didn’t know that he was tricked by Xiang Miang.
Next morning, the old monk asks Xiang Miang to let chicken defecate in the house.
‘Today, I’m going to clean the ground by myself.’ ‘You are allowed to go outside and play’ said the old monk.
After that the monk starts licking all the chicken stools. He found that the taste is so bad. It wasn’t delicious like yesterday. Now, he realizes that he was tricked by Xiang Miang. What he eats yesterday must be a sugar cane but now he eats the real chicken’s stools.
Funny?....I think so!
